RESUME TIPS FOR WORKSEEKERS:
Workseekers, check these guidelines for resume writing before completing and
sending your resume.
|
| ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
Keep the format
readable and uncluttered.
- Make sure your resume is readable by choosing an appropriate font, such as
Verdana or Arial.
- Keep a fair amount of white space around paragraphs to prevent your resume
from looking "cluttered" to the eye.
- Keep your resume limited to two pages maximum in length. Recruiters simply do
not have time to wade through a 12 page resume.
|
Order your
information logically.
- Display important information first, such as you contact details, location
and so on.
- State your career goals next, including where you want to work, salary
expectations and when you will be available.
- Order your career history from your most recent position to your last
relevant position.
- Provide a skills matrix, particularly if you have specialized technical
skills.
|
Language usage.
- Be concise and "to the point" when describing your employment history by
using short sentences and avoiding unnecessary words.
- Use jargon and acronyms only if applicable to your industry. Avoid
"business-speak" such as "leverage", "synergy" and so on.
- Describe your current position in the present tense and describe prior
positions in the past tense.
- Make sure your resume is free of spelling errors and grammar errors.
- Use a spell-checker, but also get someone who is well-versed in English to
proof-read your resume.
|
Correctness of
information.
- Keep your information current. A resume that is two years old is of no use to
you, recruiters or potential employers.
- Put a date on your resume, stating that the information is current to that
date.
- Don't exaggerate your achievements or responsibilities when describing your
employment history.
|
Resume
targeting.
- If you know what kind of job you are looking for and you have found a couple
of job advertisements that match your requirements, spend some time
analysing the description given in the advert, then check your
resume to see if you get any "matches" in terms of what is being
advertised.
